If you could only train Dead Lift or Squat which would you train? Also, which has a better carry over for Strongman and Oly lifting?

Strongman-deadlift Oly lifting-squat
If I could only train one it would be the deadlift, but I compete in strongman. Life would be less fun not squatting though.

I agree. Men with strong backs are strong, men with weak backs are weak. But for strongman, you're always having to pick something from the ground. Stones, hasufel, log, axle, keg, farmers, etc... If you don't have the back strength it doesn't matter how strong anything else is.

squatting > Deadlifting. Squatting equates better athleticism, more explosiv... Wait, why do you have to choose?

On my current program I squat before I dead lift. My squatting volume is also way higher than my dead lift volume. I was wondering if I should switch what I am doing. So, I don't have to choose between the two, I just was wondering what everyone thought was more important.

Over time...I have come to agree with Colin on his post. Although, for some strange reason training the deadlift for O lifting I Believe could be a valuable tool as well. After all, a strong posterior chain is required to snatch/clean and jerk big weights, right? Seems logical to me! - If I could train one I Would definitely squat (only because I am naturally better at it).

I also agree with CW....but if you like the program you are on I still think that you must squat before you deadlift or your low back will be shot before the squat and your form will break down and you open yourself up for injery....I cant spell worth a shit so disregard any mis spellings

Thanks for the responses guys!
Tit: Is you squat and dead lift volume the same? Meaning if you do 5x5 squat do you do a 5x5 dead? Or do you think that's just too much strain? We were doing 8x2 squat followed by 12x1 dead and I felt that the 12 reps weren't enough even though the volume was close. We just changed our deads to 5x3 which I think will help build strength faster but could definitely be wrong.

If I could only train one I'd train the squat. The squat suits Oly lifting more IMO and deadlifting more for strongman.

I would have to say I'd choose to squat, i dont know what it is about having big weight on ur back, sitting down with it and then having to stand up. I just like it, haha. also, I'd like to add that between clean grip deadlift and snatch deadlift, i prefer snatch grip deadlift. not sure why, but i think that your upper back is worked slightly more bc the wide grip places more stress upon it. thats just my 2 cents

I don't really have an opinion I guess on which I like better, but I agree with tit in that if you deadlift before squatting then it tires your lower back and makes it hard to keep good form during heavy squats. I squat first, then deadlift after myself

I love DL'ing, but not SN grip haha.
