I don't think I Have ever seen a true strict press in a block press, keg press, or DB pressing event. Usually there is leg movement involved, at least with the top guys there ALWAYS is. Even big Z gets a ton of carryover from his legs on most pressing events.
Colin- you bring up a good point. It is not a good main OH movement. It's role as an accessory is also interesting. One thing I Have found is that naturally strong push pressers tend to be naturally strong strict pressers, so don't see the need for it. I think incline bench would be even a better accessory mvmt since it'd at least be heavier.
As for WEIGHTLIFTING- One of the top americans of all time could jerk 200kg(440lbs)+ on any given day... but couldn't strict press 90kg(198lbs). Think it matters? hahaha!! Enough said for me.

TOP 10 things that could be substituted for the strict press (and equally beneficial IMO):10. Loading weights on a bar to jerk it. 9. Starting a petition to ban the strict press permanently from all gyms. 8. Blowing your nose or wiping your behind. 7. Jamming out to Lil' Wayne, DMX, Three Six Mafia, or Brittney Spears (any of them would suffice) 6. Watching youtube videos of people ACTUALLY strict pressing and laughing so hard you cry. 5. Spreading rumors about people who strict press (because it's way more fun, too) 4. Taking the browns to the super bowl (or the kids to the pool) 3. 1 burpee 2. Praying your jerk/push press will go up (much more carryover than strict pressing LOL) 1. Picking up the phone to call me and apologize for strict pressing (hahahaha jk jk) Please feel free to add to the list... To all of those who actually strict press... don't take me too seriously, I am just having some fun.

Please see the humor haha.. don't take me too seriously. I still wanna hear everyone's opinions, believe me, I will not get offended either way. I like discussing it. I won't shoot your ideas down or anything like that, just having fun.

I like the press because it helps me to grow a better 'frontal meat shelf' for cleans and front squats. It is also nice because it can be crammed easily into the end of a workout. I think it is beneficial for back strength. I don't think it ruins my jerk in any way, but I do think that behind-the-neck presses are more applicable to the jerk. I like the top ten list, though

Strict presses are a solid accessory movement for the shoulders. I am not arguing about the merits of strict pressing vs. any other form of OH pressing. I think there are many movements not done by many strongman competitors which are beneficial. It is an isolation movement which works the muscles its targeting in a good capacity.
I think the strict press has no purpose in an oly lifting program, except if someone wanted to create additional hypertrophy and move up a class.
But the movement isolates the deltoids very well (better isolation then most other movements) and allows for hypertrophy in that area, as well as static strength in the anterior deltoid.
I believe there are many superior movements for improving lockout strength. I personally like close grip board pressing. Since adding these my lockout strength has improved monthly. But to really finish off the shoulders (which in some programs is required) I find strict presses to be a great movement. I've been doing them 5X5 as my final pressing movement of the day fairly regularly and have had positive results, mainly in the form of hypertrophy.
I understand that for oly lifters there is really no need, but I was commenting more on strongman competitors. Or anyone who want bigger shoulders.

My body responds very well to strict press. I find when I can lift something with as few muscles as possible, I get an amazing carry over in multiple muscle lifts. So, if I strict press a lot it will help my push press. That's the way I work anyway...

It appears I am completely out matched 3-1 here. I know King is a big supporter and Vince is a non-supporter, so that is 4-2. I am curious to what the others think? haha if anything else it's some good reading material.

I will max strict press later today just for the heck of it to see what I can do haha, hopefully it's at least 90kg. I used to be able to do 120kg fairly easy, but we'll see now lol.

the only reason I could see doing any form of strick pressing would be for injury prevention for the shoulders. I've seen lifters from Red Wing do reps with dumbells with a neutral grip. My point is that the press used to be apart of weightlifting, but it got dropped in 1972 so now they are useless except for it's little remedial value. It's like Zlaten Vanev of Bulgaria doing reps with a couple 5kg plates in the curl exercise after his workout. He blew out his elbow a few times, so he did some remedial curls with light weight for a little injury prevention. Same if you had bad shoulders, maybe do some light pressing overhead at the end of your workout for some injury prevention, nothing crazy, maybe 5X5 with the bar or 40-50kgs at the most.

I did 110kg that day haha- it was a muscle clean & strict press. Kinda fun for a change actually.

What is everyone else's strict press like? I have never done them consistently, and haven't done direct OH work (besides jerks) in a few years now...
Even if you hate the strict press, just take 3 minutes and max and see what it is haha- I am curious.

In a couple of weeks Holly and I are going to have a silly-PR day where we test our press, biceps curls, and deadlift and stuff. Hell, maybe we'll even rig up a bench for some bench preses. I'll let you know then! I think my max is around 65 lbs, though.
