Jared, as you know I have been looking for some equipment to buy. I found something that I am thinking about getting. It is a smith machine that I know would have many uses such as squat, bench, and even a pulley system for lats and triceps. It also comes with 300 lbs of olympic plates. My question is..would this machine be as helpful to me as normal free weights would be? I remember using something like this back in the day at the wellness center. The website is at the bottom of this post so you can understand what I am talking about better. ames.craigslist.org/spo/1158081811.html

That is not a bad price at all. I would try to negotiate a bit with them, say $200 they'll pry counter- try to just get something between 200 and 275 if possible... but, 275 still isn't bad. I think it would be a great buy if you are looking to have your own gym set up in your house. 1 thing to think about is teardown for when you move... will it fit easily thru doors, can you get it thru your doors? make sure you ask about teardown, how ti comes apart, how it is to put together, how old it is... those kinds of questions... it'd suck to buy it and completely suck to tear down and get into your house. I know a buddy down here who bought a smith and couldnt even fit it in his house ha. So watch that, but yes, good price, just try to get mid 200's for it.
You can still do a lot of good movements on it- you are right- it will feel a bit different, but, it is better than nothing! You can still get pretty strong on that thing- just a different feel than a free flowing barbell.

Now that I thought about it, it is pretty huge and I think it would almost be more of a hassle than anything. Plus, it would be nice to have free weights and a barbell since that is what I've been using for years. I think I am going to pass on this and try to find a good set of Olympic weights.
Also, what do you think would be the cheapest way to get a decent set of dumbbells? I know buying a set of hex dumbbells would cost a fortune. Any ideas for me there?

Very true- I'd keep it as a last resort. Keep an eye out on craigslist and ebay for the surrounding areas, even be looking all over iowa- i know lots of gyms have been closing down. This guy: cjhenze@mchsi.com closed down his gym about 6 months ago- try him and see if he has anything left- he had TONS of dumbells, benches, etc.. Im talking DIRT cheap- absolutely just trying to cut his losses.. many gyms that close are- like it was $.25/lb for plates!!!!!!!!!! insane- will never ever find that again.. its generally $1.00+ with Jesup gym being $.80 and rising/lb. you can try jesupgym.com for sets tlook all over on craigs- because something will come up. I wish I would have waited. But, more gyms will close- just pry not as close as Iowa City like that one was- That is what I am waiting for- in about 2-3 years- a gym to close and to buy their equipment- all of it- straight up- for cheap- that is the best route to go, with jesupgym being #2 imo.
