What is everyone's take on crossfitters? As far as athleticism... in comparison to other sports as well?

IMO, its hard to decide bc u seem to get such a wide variety of ppl that do Crossfit. Now if you're talking about some of the more elite ppl that compete, I would say they are athletic. It seems as though a lot of em were former athletes, variety of levels, that were looking for that competitive edge again.

I think Crossfit produces good Crossfitters. I mean, when you use the word "athlete," I think of a person who specializes in a specific physical activity and tries to excel as much as possible in that context. Crossfit just seems too randomized to produce excellence in a specific area. Does that make sense? I mean, there's a reason you guys train PRIMARILY O-lifts and I train PRIMARILY PL. If we all tried to do everything it would be shooting ourselves in the foot.
Some WODs suit my purposes and I'm not against incorporating them, I have in the past. But most don't, and they don't for most athletes who are trying to excel in a sport other than... doing Crossfit. That's why I say, Crossfit makes great Crossfit athletes.
As to what Alex said, too, it seems to by method and packaging attract people who were already athletic. Your average fattie trying to drag themselves off the couch would not likely pick a Crossfit regimen, LOL. And to stick my toe in the enormous pool of criticism out there for the program, I don't think anyone with much athletic intelligence would even recommend Crossfit for a person with a non-athletic background.

I think crossfit is great for someone who is not interested in competing in a sport, but still wants to have a competitive workout and be in good general shape/be healthy. It certainly requires a certain degree of athleticism.
Why are you thinking of making the switch Jared? (as you said in your log)

I actually did crossfit for a few months when I was going through the police academy. I don't know how athletic one has to be to do it, but I'd say the elite guys are pretty athletic. I liked the variety the workouts had. Deadlift, cleans, muscle up... I also liked not having to come up with a workout everyday. It was kind of like having a personal trainer. I didn't like the running. And there was a lot of running!

I do believe many of the top guys and gals are very athletic. Most of the random crossfitters...not so much haha! But, it's a great "sport" that is really growing and sparking a lot of interest in working out from the masses... It pulls a lot of people out of the woodworks to get fit because of the "hardcore/intense" kind of description everyone gives it. I think it really challenges you mentally different than anything else (other than organized sport), so people flock to it after they're done with org. sport..
