I won't be doing a heavy strict press for about a month and I'll let you know then. I've done 100 on my 13.5" log though, I very rarely strict press with a BB.

haha you all know i'm kidding about the lbs/kgs. I don't care either way.
Do you guys "prestretch/preload" before you press it? As in... make it go down before it goes up? rather than from an ABSOLUTE dead stop? I mean even if it is very small I feel it makes a difference.. just askin...

I honestly feel I did not lower the bar during that mini cycle last year. I was aware of how much it helps and tried to avoid it. Now if I saw a video, maybe I would see things differently ha.

I knew an older guy who used to do strict (seated) military in contests. He said the judge would hold his hand over the bar and the lifter could not press the bar any faster than how quickly the hand rose. Now that is strict judging. I've probably told all of you that story before, but here it is again. Far cry from the bent push jerks Rigert and the likes were doing when they removed the press from weightlifting.

Would you consider Connor's press legit (first video)?

I do think it's easier if you push press it up before beginning from the top. On my own I often forget to do this and start from the bottom, but sometimes on heavy sets or if Charley hassles me I'll start from the top. I also don't count my initial deadlift if I"m doing RDLs...I figure a little more work can only help me

Vince, I do care, but I don't care. Does that make sense? If someone DOES use that technique I want to know if they did or not, but, I don't care for the sense of strength building/judging lifts. I do think you get benefit from it though. Lillian- what I am referring to isn't the push press. I just mean the bar moving down before it goes up, causing a preload/stretch in the entire upper body: see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=_jfJ0YIB0hwSee the difference there? No leg bend, just pre-stretching the muscles before actually doing what is supposed to be a "strict" press. Strict to me means zero movement before beginning to move the barbell upwards. vince- would I consider the first video a strict press? "strict" is a loose word. Check out the preload/stretch he does (also the slight lean back/legs bend SLIGHTLY. To me, no. But, is it very very close to a strict press? yes. I also prestretch it usually (creates this sort of rubber band element IMO), usually just to stroke my ego hahaha. seriously. Then again, I strict press like once every decade so I don't have a ton of credibility on the strict press debate.

What I meant was that I think that it's easier to push press the bar up to where your arms are completely extended, then consider that your start point. So that each press goes "down-up-down" rather than starting from your chest so it goes "up-down-up". Personally I think that starting at the top is cheating, but both of my coaches have encouraged me to do that. It's weird since they both used to do the clean and press.

I was only refering to your "idc" in the cheap shot comment when I asked if you cared. Just being stupid, I should have been more clear. That was a pretty slick job of answering me in another sense though. ;D
There's no doubt that any dip can make a huge difference. It is like comparing squat numbers. A legitimate squat can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people. I will try to get videos of both my press and push press techniques here soon. I am starting to do push presses again to (hopefully) help my jerk.

Oh yes, I know exactly what you were saying, I just thought you were confused on what I meant. Doing that obviously allows more weight to be used, but whether or not it is "strict" is definitely to be considered.
